Large Garden for a New Build House Facing the South Downs in Henfield
This stunning new build house in Henfield boasts a breathtaking view of the South Downs. However, the sloping site presented a unique design challenge. Inspired by the terraced rice fields of South Asia, the garden design incorporates several curved terraces to seamlessly navigate the level changes. These terraces not only create aesthetically pleasing spaces that harmonize with the surrounding fields but also provide perfect spots for outdoor dining and relaxation.
Terraced Design
The curved terraces are the key feature of the garden, creating a dynamic and visually appealing landscape. They gently step down the slope, maximizing usable space and offering different perspectives of the surrounding scenery. The terraces also provide natural definition for various garden zones.
For the outdoor dining area, an alternative to a traditional pergola was chosen: a canopy of four parasol trees. These trees will add structure and create a unique form of natural garden architecture. As living structures, they offer year-round interest, constantly changing with the seasons and providing shade in the summer months.
Wildlife Pond and Natural Drainage
At the bottom of the garden, where the ground is naturally wet and boggy, a wildlife pond will be constructed. This feature serves a dual purpose. It will help manage surface water, mimicking natural drainage to reduce the risk of flooding, and simultaneously create a beautiful and vital habitat for local wildlife. The pond will attract a variety of creatures, from insects and amphibians to birds and small mammals, adding another layer of interest to the garden.
This garden is currently under construction. I am eagerly looking forward to sharing more pictures of the finished project once the landscaping is complete and the planting is established. The transformation from concept to reality will be exciting to witness, and I anticipate the garden becoming a cherished space for the homeowners to enjoy for years to come.
