Wildlife and Crafts Border - People's Choice Prize
This border is designed to celebrate wildlife and crafts and has won the People's Choice Prize.
With pollinator-friendly plants, this border provides not only food and water but also shelter and home for wildlife. Handmade twig trellis, tall wooden bee and bug hotels, willow wean hedge ramp and terra-cotta hedgehog house, all these functional crafts have added a lovely "human touch". They are the perfect sustainable alternatives to mass production designs.
The three twig trellis are inspired by the ornamental windows of Suzhou gardens in China. The sweet chestnut sticks and twigs used for the trellis are kindly donated by local wood craftsmen in east Sussex.
I made these three twig trellis at the Burgess Hill Shed, which is a wonderful community space for creativity, learning and well-being. David taught me how to use all the woodworking tools there! The bee and bug hotels are made of old “pipe boxes”' which we found in the Mid Sussex Wood Recycling Yard. They are made by my husband and son as their after school projects.
